Ready to get your hands dirty and your spirits high?
Join us for "Sip & Spin," a one-day introduction to pottery throwing that's all about the joy of the experience and trying your hand(s) at a new skill. Perfect for absolute beginners, those with experience, or anyone looking to unwind creatively, this class will have you laughing and learning as you explore the basics of throwing pottery on the wheel.
In our relaxed and welcoming studio, you’ll learn how to center clay on the wheel, open up your piece, and pull up the walls. You will have a ½ lbs practice ball of clay, and two 1 lbs balls to attempt to make your piece. Fair warning - throwing is a creative and artistic process. Some may make a bowl or vase, but many will opt for a spoon rest or plate for their first throwing. Our friendly instructors will guide you through each step, making sure you have a blast along the way, even if you only end up with muddy hands and good memories.
And what’s a fun class without a little refreshment?
Wine, beer, & coffee are available for purchase during the session, so you can sip while you spin and let the creativity flow! The full Athenaeum food menu is also available, but due to the muddy nature of throwing, we recommend you plan to eat before or after your class time.
Want to take your new hobby to the next level?
We offer optional follow-up days where you can learn how to trim and glaze your clay creations. But for now, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. Come alone, bring a friend, or make it a group outing – either way, you’re in for a wheel-y good time!
Price includes:
2-3 hour throwing class, including all materials needed, use of a pottery apron, and expert instruction.
Professional trimming, glazing, and firing of your final piece.
This event is limited to ages 18 and up.
Add-on Options:
$7 - Additional Pieces
If you end up with more than one piece, you can request trimming, glazing, and firing for additional pieces at $7 per piece to cover the additional costs and time.
$45 - Extension Classes / Roam Pottery Certificate
Want to learn the full process? We offer an extension class package that includes trimming of your piece the following day, and then glazing instruction (about 10 days after your class). Going through the extension classes, and meeting all the requirements, will also grant you the Roam Pottery Certificate that is required to join our Open Pottery Days for access to clay/wheels/glazes and firing so you can continue to make additional pottery pieces and refine your pottery skills.
